looking for a pattern

Postby mytreasuredheirlooms » March 5th, 2010, 10:01 pm

hi all, I've tried designing something like this myself but they always turn out disastrous. does anybody happen to know of a pattern. I've looked in the past but I admit I haven't looked lately, I will look again. at one time I worked with a designer who made these shirts, I love the way they look when layering and I want some but I want to make it out of a softer lighter weight fabric. the body I'm fine with, it's the sleeves that I have a problem with. notice there are no seams for the sleeves, it all in 2 pieces, front and back.

I also saw some on etsy that I like that also have similar sleeves

also does anybody know how to limit the listings you get on etsy, I tried to remove screen printed shirt by doing -screen -print -screenprint but it didnt work.

I think you're wanting to design a top, am I right? If you go to this site:

Then scroll down to the "Kimono" illustration, that should help you with the mathmatics of it.

If you haven't done a lot of pattern drafting before, you might find the instructions in the vintage drafting book a little confusing - the instructions show the entire pattern, but not hte step-by-steps. The type of sleeve with the cap sleeve-ish look in one is usually described as either a drop shoulder (no seam along the arm scye) or a cap sleeve (with seam). I recommend anything by Winnifred Aldrich for pattern drafting. Try and see if your library has a copy of "Metric Pattern Drafting for Women". Her instructions are very clear, and taken point by point. Doing a drop shoulder is quite straight forward - it can be as simple as simply lowering the shoulder line and redrawing the armscye or you can make a cap-sleeve kimono style, which is more involved but gives a more interesting line, IMHO.

Claire, I have that book. Someday I may get into trying to draft some patterns. I do a bit of changing patterns now, but know I'm not doing them the "correct" way. They seem to turn out ok, so that's all that counts for me at the moment.
I keep buying books, and letting them gather dust on the book shelf. Maybe someday I'll need something to occupy my mind, but at the moment it's sewing, and playing on the computer.

thank you every one. I caved and bought one, shipping alone was half the cost of the top, but I'll be able to make more tops from it. I know that the tops are easy to make, I made enough of them but it's just getting the shoulder just right. These kinds of tops look really good when wearing under other tops. I've tried layering with the kinds of t's you would buy at walmart and target but never liked the look
